Tide questions, answered
Where does the tide data come from?
US tides come from NOAA's Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS). Canadian tides come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. We show their predictions and gauge readings without changing them.
Why is the real water level different from the prediction?
Predictions only cover the pull of the moon and sun. Wind, air pressure, rain and river flow push water up or down. That is why we show the live gauge next to the forecast where a gauge exists.
What does 0 ft mean on a tide chart?
It is the chart datum. In the US, zero is Mean Lower Low Water, the average of each day's lower low tide. In Canada, zero is usually Lower Low Water, Large Tide, a lower level. A minus tide means the water drops below that line. More on MLLW and chart datum.
What is a spring tide?
It is a tide with a bigger range than usual. The highs are higher and the lows are lower. Spring tides happen twice a month, near the new and full moon. They have nothing to do with the season.
What is a king tide?
It is a popular name for the highest tides of the year. They happen when a spring tide lines up with the moon's closest point to Earth. NOAA notes it is not a scientific term. Read the king tides guide.

No. This site is for planning a day at the coast. For navigation, use official NOAA or CHS products and charts, and check local conditions.
